Quote: “Loose connections are drawn and then transformed into major stories based on a casual meeting between someone who knows Trump and someone who knows Putin. There’s an endless appetite for such stories on the left, not because of their content, but because they reaffirm the left’s conviction in Trump’s downfall.”

Quote: “Beijing will continue to build up its naval strength in the years to come, but it will continue to lag the U.S. Navy’s force projection capabilities for decades to come….Eventually, China is expected to possess a six-ship carrier fleet, allowing its navy to have four in operation at a time, which would give it a capability second only to that of the U.S. Navy.”

The Problem With Science: speculative theory, bad science, statistical chicanery, phony research, science as religion – and much more, Jeremy Samuel Faust, Slate

Quote: “Let’s face it: People like science when it supports their views. I see this every day…Who needs science when you have something mightier—personal experience?…Most of what you read and hear about turns out to be mere associations, and mostly fairly weak ones, at that.”

Money: How Wells Fargo Cutthroat Corporate Culture (Allegedly) Drove Bankers To Fraud, Bethany McLean, Vanity Fair

CS Commentary: CS put the word ‘allegedly’ in the original title in parenthesis because we used to work at Wells Fargo many years ago. There is no ‘allegedly’ about this title or article. Wells Fargo was the most amoral, upside-down, insane corporate culture we have ever witnessed in our work history (and we’ve witnessed a few). The reader can rest assured that any of the executives or middle managers mentioned in this article who were sued, fined or fired, completely deserved it. It remains to be seen whether the bank or the culture has truly been reformed. While we were there the employees who advanced their careers were the a-morals without a conscience who were willing to commit fraud and screw customers to please the bosses and get ahead. Rest assured that at least some of the middle management at Wells Fargo today is made up of these people. During the 1990’s and 2000’s, at least, Wells Fargo culture was a reflection of the “Greed is good” ethos of Michael Douglas’s Gordon Gekko, of “Wall Street” fame. With its recent $185 million Federal fine, the bank got off much easier than it should have.
