Democrats kept howling for an investigation of any 2016 campaign chicanery, and like the dog that chased cars until he caught one, they may be sorry they ever started this pursuit. The House Intelligence Committee has issued subpoenas for witnesses to testify, but just as Democrats were salivating at the thought of grilling all those Trump aides about Russia on TV, there came news that must’ve hit them like a 2-by-4 in the forehead: three of the subpoenas are for information relating to Obama officials; former national security adviser Susan Rice, former CIA Director John Brennan and former United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power. The Committee seems interested in finding out how names of Trump aides were illegally unmasked after they talked to someone who was being monitored by the NSA. The names of Americans caught in surveillance of outside parties, like Michael Flynn, are supposed to be kept secret.
Just as a reminder: the leaking of Flynn’s name to the press is still the only actual violation of federal law that has been exposed in this entire, endless paranoid fever dream known as the “Russian collusion scandal.” Democrats have been so focused on attacking everyone associated with Trump and trying to blame a Russian conspiracy for their own election loss that it apparently never occurred to them that a wide-ranging investigation of wrongdoing might turn up far more slime on their side than on the Republican side. And it might not be limited to this Committee: the special counsel they demanded, Robert Mueller, has a mandate to examine all aspects of alleged Russian collusion. “All aspects” could easily include Obama officials who might have politicized the US intelligence apparatus to spy on Trump aides and illegally unmasked their names to undermine his Administration.
I suspect these Democratic bloodhounds are going to end up being sorry they ever started chasing this car and wish they’d just let sleeping dogs lie.
