The Atlantic has an interesting article on why the Democrats are having a “religion problem;” that is, why voters of faith are abandoning them. Anyone who’s baffled by that would also wonder why ancient Christians might not have been too fond of the lions that ate them.
The left lectures us constantly on respecting every culture, yet when it comes to American Christians, their attitude is to mock them openly and use the heavy hand of government to force them to violate their sacred beliefs. The Obama Administration even hauled the Little Sisters of the Poor into federal court with a ruinous lawsuit to try to force nuns to pay for contraceptives and abortion drugs. They wonder why they’re not getting the votes of religious people when they go after the Little Sister of the Poor with a meat axe? Their obtuseness borders on the miraculous.
To show how utterly disconnected they are even from the parts of Christian culture that should be part of our common language, this article recounts the frustrations Michael Wear, Obama’s former director of faith-outreach, suffered in trying to communicate with his staff. He once wrote a piece promoting Obama’s views on poverty to the faith community and titled it, “Economic Fairness and the Least of These.” Another Obama staffer kept deleting “the Least of These,” carping, “Is this a typo? It doesn’t make any sense to me. Who/what are ‘these’?”
Obviously, to that person, “these” meant “those.” As in, “Those people I have nothing in common with.”
